Chemistry is a such a versatile and interesting degree- and even though it is challenging, it is definitely worthwhile. But why choose it at Leicester? So many universities offer it but what is so great about Leicester?
At Leicester we have a fair few lectures per day- which means you’re not just getting 5 hours a week- it’s more like 5 hours a day teaching time.
Now this may sound like hell on earth when you’re in first year and trying to attend lectures with a hangover, but it will mean you will have plenty of time to grasp more difficult aspects of the course (which is def better than being majorly stressed at the end!!) Also, if you attend the majority of your lectures, lecturers will be more inclined to help you out- which means they will give you 1:1 help if you don’t understand something, which is always reassuring.
You also get a lot of time in labs- which is great for practice for when you begin applying for placements! There are plenty of Phd students supervising your time in the labs, so if you’re stuck, or unsure how to use the equipment, there is always someone to ask.
The course covers a wide range of chemical applications, meaning there is something for everyone (presuming you like chemistry!) so no-one can say every aspect is boring. Plus, it gives you an insight in what type of chemistry you might want to pursue to a higher level (i.e definitely not organic chemistry for me!)
Finally, at Leicester the majority of the staff will go often out of their way to help you to understand and make life easier for you, such as bound, printed notes (most courses don’t do that!!) and drop in sessions for you to ask any questions.
Caring staff and friendly students combined with leading experts in their respective fields make studying Chemistry at Leicester a pleasure, and I would encourage prospective students to seriously consider making Leicester as one of their choices.
