Are you nervous? It’s ok if you are. Don’t let university frighten you. It is what you make of it. And it is awaiting you with its plethora of opportunities.
It’s ok if you don’t get along with your flatmates in first year. They don’t have to be your best friends. Perhaps you’ll find a lifetime friend in the stranger sitting next to you in class or the bus you’re taking to town. Don’t be afraid to make conversation. You might fumble at first or talk too much or too little. But it will get better with time, I promise.
It’s ok to make mistakes. You’ll stumble and fall once in a while. What’s more important is that you get up and confront your weaknesses and turn them into your strengths.
And my dear friend, never compare yourself with anyone. Everyone finds success through different routes, some more bumpy than others. But don’t let yourself down. You are special. A failure or two does not define you. Get up and fight again like the warrior you are.
And you must know that these are going to be some of the best years of your life. You’ll meet some wonderful people, have some wonderful experiences. But most of all, you’ll have the time to find yourself. So take up every opportunity that comes your way and don’t let anything or anyone limit you. Get out of your comfort zone and widen your horizons. Don’t be afraid to lead or ashamed to follow. Stay safe. Be kind. Eat well and look after your health.
So with this final post, I bid you adieu. I hope you have a great time here at the University of Leicester and find in it your home away from home the way I did. I wish you all the very best!
