From the age of 17 I have always had a part time job, balancing this with my studies and extra activities became normal for me. Working part time has taught me lot about organisational skills. The Student Union provide many opportunities to work as a Student Staff in Starbucks, The Union Diner, O2 academy and The Union Shop.
In my second year I worked in the Student Union shop, previously known as Nourish but now converted into this shiny new Union Street Food Market. Which includes a hot and cold deli bar, a self-serve salad bar, grab and go section, bubble tea station and finally the most popular section the bagel station. Another new feature in the shop is a pop up stand that allows local businesses to sell their food on campus.
You can grab your freshly made orange juice, head over to the soup station or even see who is at the pop up stand that day, the Union Street Food Market has it all. Between midday and 2pm you can also expect a performer or the student radio station LUSH in the Buskers’ Corner.
My time working here has taught me a lot, and proved to be a different environment compared to working in other retail positions. The Union Street Food Market is a fast pace environment, with a large friendly team. As part of the university regulations student staff can only work a maximum of 15 hours, allowing you to concentrate on your studies. Another benefit of working in the union shop is that your shifts surround your timetable, therefore working well around your studies and the exam period.
Keep a look out on the Student Union website for job opportunities on campus.
