Starting 3rd year many of the 4th years told me that 3rd year is horrible, they said the jump from 2nd year to 3rd year was huge. Whilst I do think it is true that there is quite a jump between 2nd and 3rd year, I don’t think it was quite as bad as they made it sound.
One thing I heard many student complain about was Physics Challenge. I actually quite enjoyed this module, however, when it came to the exam I think I understood why some people disliked this module so much. For this module there is no strict syllabus, so the subject matter of the exam can be very broad. It was for this reason, and because it was my last exam, I entered the exam very unprepared. I suspect this will be the exam I did the worst on, however, my coursework mark should bring my overall mark for this module up, so I’m not too worried. In retrospect I should have done more revision for this exam and started earlier.
My other exams seemed to have gone, at the very least okay, and in some cases quite well. I won’t speculate too much; I expect to get my results back later this month.
Overall, I quite enjoyed 3rd year. My favourite modules were Quantum Mechanics and Cosmology. I also enjoyed my pair project and the fact I didn’t have to do labs anymore. I have chosen my speciality electives for next year: Further and General Relativity; Statistical Mechanics; Supermassive Black Holes and Quantum Fields. I now have a much needed ~4 month break before starting the final year of my degree.
