Avignon is known as a city of culture, it’s not a big place but there’s plenty of museums, theatres and cultural events. In the University planner (that I got given upon arrival), it has a card called the ‘Patch Culture’ and it’s for students to be able to get discounts and to go and visit the theatre or cinema etc more often.
On Saturday I went to my first theatre performance which was to see ‘Le lac des cygnes’ (Swan Lake) ballet, I’d booked the tickets a month earlier so I was really looking forward to going. The ballet was beautiful, the dancers danced incredibly well!
There’s also a theatre with performances on every week, I have yet to watch a play but that’s something I plan to do before leaving.
I have though visited three museums here, ‘Collection Lambert’ which is mainly photography, art and some sculptures and also, ‘Musée Calvet’ which is my favourite! The reason why I liked it was because the building itself is very beautiful and the paintings are amazing! there’s an Egyptian section too which I liked with a sarcophagus and other Ancient Egyptian artefacts and then finally ‘Palais des Papes’ which I have mentioned in previous blogs.
Every week, there’s always a music event from open mic to a jazz concert, it’s quite varied. I went to listen to one group in a restaurant here, well it was more a collective meal in a house, because you pay one price and everyone eats what the host has prepared and there’s live music. It was a really good evening, great food and music!
Anyways, as you can see there’s a lot of culture here in Avignon which is a good way to keep yourself entertained!
