Hey y’all!
My name’s Jack and I have been given the privilege to take over the reins of this American Studies Blog. I’m just about to enter my final year at Leicester which means I’m only one year away from entering the real world which is a horrifying but exciting thought. Hopefully you will find this blog interesting and helpful when trying to gain an insight into the life of an American Studies student.
I’m originally from Portsmouth which is a glorious part of the world. Other than the demise of its football club and its decline into the murky waters of fourth tier football the city itself is somewhat being transforming into a ‘cool’ seaside haven. I put ‘cool’ in inverted commas because it all depends on what your idea of ‘cool’ is. Portsmouth could be seen by some people as a poor man’s Brighton due to the hoards of hipsters that roam the streets and the numerous indie bars that have set up shop in the city. Which, I guess, is my idea of ‘cool’. But all of my family live in Portsmouth so I really wanted to discover new parts of the country which is why Leicester was at the top of my list. I could only see myself doing one thing at Leicester and that was American Studies.
I chose American Studies because of the combination of History, Film, Politics and Literature it provides. I love American gangster films and learning about the effects of prohibition. Name any Robert De Niro film and it’s highly likely I’ve seen it. Name any American gangster and I’ve probably read about them (and probably imagined I was a gangster like them at least once). I’ve been able to choose and pick modules that satisfy my thirst for all things obscure in American society which is why America Studies is the course for me. And I hope it is for you too!
So that’s the bread and butter about me and the course. Hope you keep popping back for a gander to see what I have been up to over the summer in anticipation for my third year at university.
If you’ve got any questions or comments about what I talk about in my posts or anything to do with the course or university just send them my way through the comments section below.
Cheers,
Jack
