Hey y’all. So tonight’s the night. It’s the last ever episode of Boardwalk Empire and it’s going to be an emotional one.
Luckily the programme is based on real characters so technically I’m doing extra reading for my degree, right? One character in particular, Jay Edgar Hoover, is very prominent in my McCarthyism module. The module is all about the two Red Scare’s and American’s continuous fear of Communism effecting the American way of life so I would count it as secondary reading for sure… Maybe.
The programme itself follows the main character, Nucky Thomson, through the years of prohibition and the conflicts between his family, legitimate job and gangster lifestyle. Several well known gangsters from the time are also featured in the series. Al Capone, Lucky Luciano and Arnold Rothstein are all portrayed as power hungry tyrants in the series. It’s genuinely hard to determine where the series is going to go in the last episode though. We all know Al Capone’s fall from greatness was because of tax evasion but is he going to have the same fate in Boardwalk Empire? And what will these mean for the other fictional characters? It’s so hard to write this without giving away anything but I urge you to watch the first episode. Not just because its a cracking episode but it’s also directed with big Martin Scorsese who knows a little bit about the gangster genre.
I’ll let you know how it goes without spoiling it but it’s sure to be an absolute stonker of an episode. It better be. I’ve been waiting for what seems a lifetime for it even if it has only been a week.
Cheers,
Jack
