Hey y’all. In past month or two there have been several prestigious occasions where celebrities have spoke about pressing societal issues, Civil rights being one of the most frequently talked topics. I think it’s important that high status celebrities voice the concerns of the public as they have a bigger platform to do so. People may claim that some celebrities speak out to plunge themselves into the limelight for their own ends but the majority seem to speak out to change society for the better.
One of the most significant displays of social activism from celebrities could be seen at this year’s Oscars (this can be seen below). Common and John Legend, who are musical legends in their own right speak out about the growing tensions in America and the racial inequality that still exists today, 50 years after the introduction of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. In my opinion its one of the best and most emotive acceptance speeches ever. When you get a standing ovation from Captain Kirk you know you’ve done well.
Celebrities giving their support to social issues helps give social debates more standing in a social sphere where they may not have previously done so . In other words it can only be a good thing that celebrities are becoming more pro-active instead of sitting on their laurels. In fact it should be their duty to do so.
I could write about this topic for days as its something that’s always in the media and is very prominent in American society. What’s your views on the protests and activism in America? Slot them in the comments section below.
Cheers,
Jack
