Hey y’all. The British general election is approaching and everyone’s got their own opinion on which party they want to vote for and why. I thought I’d do a little comparison between the political systems of both America and Britain to try and distinguish which is better and why.
The most noticeable difference between both systems is the difference in power the President and the Prime Minister have. Unlike the US system the UK government is not split into branches. What ever party has the greatest number of members within the British House of Commons is the top dog. The Prime Minister is usually the head of the party and he/she can install any of their cronies in to the cabinet. With this position the Prime Minister can make alliances, declare war on anyone and have the final say in whether to push the big red button to arm nuclear weapons. This is completely different in America. The US President has to pass bills and decisions through congress and if they don’t allow it to happen, it won’t. Simple as that. For example is very hard for Obama as a Democrat to get anything done with a Congress that is predominantly Republican. They clash and nothing gets done.
But there are similarities between the two political systems. Both political engines use election based systems to install political members. Britain elects MPs to The House of Commons and America vote in politicians to The House of Representatives. The British political system seems to be more politically liberal than the American system due to the powers the overall party gain when they are in power. The way that some officials are elected suggests that the American political system is better. This is because those in The House of Lords in Britain are unelected and the Senate in America is elected. The fact that Britain is unelected could suggest that the people’s voices aren’t getting heard when they are in America.
To summarise, not a lot gets done in America due to the web of political pot holes that polices have to travel through BUT there is no overall party taking overall control. In Britain things seem to get done BUT only through one party; restricting policies and giving the ruling party superior power.
Oh and America have Obama which automatically makes their system better… What a man.
Let me know what system you think is better.
Cheers,
Jack
Although the American President can issue executive orders so can by pass the senate.
