So, for the second year in a row I was given the amazing opportunity to be a Study Buddy for visiting Japanese students who were taking part in the English and British Culture Programme. This role involved me attending events both in Leicester and across the United Kingdom alongside the Japanese students, giving them a point of contact, a chance to practice the English language and most importantly, a lifelong friend.
Some of the planned events included:
- Welcome Party
- A city centre tour (of Leicester!)
- Trips to cities such as London, Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and Stratford-upon-Avon
- Skittles Night
- Curry Night
- Primary School Visits
- Farewell Party
Getting involved with the programme is one of my university highlights. Whilst it is aimed at widening the confidence and opportunities for the visiting students, it has also allowed me to practice these skills as well. It is ever-so rewarding to see the English language skills of the Japanese students develop over the month that they visit and our friendships strengthen. I am still in contact with some of the students now, despite them being halfway across the world!
I would like to share some photos with you from trips and events I attended with my new friends. Keep an eye out to get involved next Spring!
