One of the biggest concerns of many prospective and current students is whether or not they can afford to attend university. The answer is yes. Whether you can get by on student loans and money kindly donated to you from the bank of Mum and Dad, or whether you need to subsidise your income with a little bit of part time work, it is financially possible for everyone to attend.
The purpose of this blog is to give you some insight into what employment opportunities are available to you whilst you are at the University of Leicester, to try and make sure you have that little bit of extra cash available when you want to buy yourself a little treat. As we have so many opportunities available, it is important that people try and take advantage of them as much as possible, and that is why I am going to share what I think, are some of the best!
- Unitemps
Unitemps is a recruitment agency which is used by a lot of universities across the country. Through this, you can apply for and be offered temporary work which is related to your university. All you have to do is sign up online and then you can begin searching for temporary jobs which you may be interested in! There is also the facility to sign up for alerts on roles which you think you may be interested in. Roles I have taken on through Unitemps include Call Centre work, helping the Medic School and working with the ELTU to organise their exchange programmes. These are all short term roles, and all you need to do to apply is submit online a CV and Cover Letter. - Student Ambassador
Becoming a Student Ambassador is a great way to earn a little bit of extra money in a job that has a lot of flexibility around your studies. The main roles for this job is helping out on the Offer Holder and Open Days that run throughout the year, but there are also a lot of opportunities to work with primary and secondary school children, higher education fairs and deliver talks. Again, in this role you can apply for the jobs that you are available for, and so are not tied down to a regular working schedule. As long as you complete two qualifying shifts a term, you can continue being a Student Ambassador. - Here For U and the Students Union
Here For U unifies and delivers all catering, retail and bar operations across our campus. Opportunities available on campus to work for Here For U come in the form of Starbucks, the Market Place, the Union Shop! and many other outlets. You can check on the website for any vacancies available at any time! These roles again, because they are associated with the university, can be flexible around your timetables. - Leicester City Centre
If working within the university isn’t for you, then the city has a lot to offer in terms of jobs. There are a lot of cafes, restaurants and bars around, including on London Road and in Clarendon Park (two of the main areas with student houses, where most second and third year students live)! There is also a lot of independent shops and chain stores in town in Haymarket and the Highcross Shopping Centre. For current vacancies in the Highcross, check out this link and for Haymarket, look here!
I hope this helps you with some ideas of where you might want to work whilst studying at the University of Leicester! If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments below!
