Saturday night brought an amazing experience in my new life in Malta, it was the first Erasmus Student Network (ESN) social of the academic year and what a way to start my new Erasmus year abroad by celebrating in style at a boat party! Before even moving into my accommodation I threw myself into the social side of Erasmus in Malta that is meeting the many international students who I will be studying and living with.
The boat left one of the many Maltese harbours in the late evening and sailed into the night towards Gozo (one of Malta’s sister islands) where it stopped for anyone wanting to jump off and swim in the beautiful Mediterranean sea. Of course I went prepared and was equipped in my swimwear and jumped into the surprisingly warm sea. Looking back this makes me realise how much of a different world you can be in and experience when taking part in an Erasmus year abroad.
However, the party was not a totally different world in terms of the music scene. The DJ on-board had an amazing set list that reminded me much of the social nights out put on by the University of Leicester’s Student Union and it was like a having a little bit of home on my first Erasmus Student Network social.
The boat party was not just a fun experience but also a great way to meet other students from all over Europe. I look forward to getting to know Malta, its people and learn more about my subject as well as the history of Malta in the next few weeks when academically things will really get moving.
(And one of my study abroad bucket list activities was go on a boat trip so tick!)
