One of the things I really missed during my year abroad was the university gym. This sounds really sad I know, but I realised how much I took my gym membership for granted in my first two years at uni. I went to the gym more for a catch up with my friends rather than to specifically work out. You’d be amazed how easy it is to gossip whilst on the cross trainer.
A year in Germany drinking waaaaaay too much beer (which I don’t even really like but it’s kind of expected to always have a Weizenbier to hand when socialising with Germans) and eating mainly meat and potatoes kind of took its toll. I tried running now and again, but I never really got on with it and much prefer to exercise indoors. The gym memberships were too pricey over there and after a long day in the lab I just wanted to slob around and watch gossip girl.
Now I’m back in Leicester, I’ve renewed my membership and went for the first time the other day. They’ve refurbished the whole place and I was quite impressed to be honest. Most machines now have their own TV and you can plug your phone in whilst working out to charge (I think, I haven’t actually tried it yet but that’s what the machine kept telling me). Upstairs has also had a revamp, with the weight machines now telling you how many reps you’ve done and in what time. I must make a point of saying that I’m talking about the gym on campus here, not Oadby. The gym in Oadby is mainly used by freshers, with it being so close to the student halls, and was brand new when I was a fresher.
Anyone considering buying a membership, I would definitely recommend it! It might seem like quite a bit of money but it’s a definite investment as you get access to both gyms, the pools (including the sauna and steam room) and also the classes (I’m hoping to be taking up Zumba again when I’m back properly). I’m looking forward to properly moving back in and getting myself back in a routine, in order to shift those extra unwanted pounds (damn you Germany and your wonderful schnitzel).
