Hi everyone! I’m Arllen, a 3rd year Medical Physiology student and the new Biological Sciences blogger for this year. A very warm goodbye to our previous blogger Daisy – we wish you all the best for the future!
Now with my final year around the corner, I thought I would start my blog by highlighting 3 things I’m excited about as a returning Leicester student this year. I’ve found after enjoying two undergraduate summers is that no matter how fun they are, they can definitely feel long. It is always exciting coming back to university, getting back into the swing of things, and seeing everyone you’ve missed again.
- Writing a dissertation (and academics generally.)
So as a 3rd year, I will finally get to work on one and I’m looking forward to it. Last year I chose a fascinating topic focused on DNA replication defects and its role in cancer. I haven’t got much to say apart from that but expect some posts about it once I properly dig into the reading.
I’m also anticipating a lot of good stuff from my lectures this year, as my modules look very interesting. Whilst studying other branches of Biological Sciences has been engaging so far, learning more about Medical Physiology is why I chose the course in the first place!
- Wandering the City
From endless window-shopping at the Highcross shopping centre to buying a bowl of bananas for 50p at the market, I am actually missing Leicester a lot! The city is so different from the seaside town where I live – and so much happens during the 2 semesters that students can get involved in.
There are huge celebrations like the Diwali Festival in October and for the comedy fans among us, the Leicester Comedy Festival in February 2017. I’m also a huge theatre fan so being close to venues like the Curve and De Montfort Hall is great as it allows me to see West End quality shows at much more affordable prices!.
- Joining new societies!
I am looking at joining a few more societies this year. Leicester has such a diverse selection that I’ve had to sign up for new things every year. Special shout-out to any K-Pop Fans amongst you as this year Leicester University is introducing its first ever K-Pop and Culture Society! Expect a post about them in the future as I am particularly thrilled to join them this year – alongside all the other societies I’ll be quizzing during Freshers Fair!
So, that’s it from me. If you’d like to know more about something I’ve mentioned, or maybe you’d like to share what excites you about Leicester, feel free to drop a comment below!
