Today the topic is films!
As I mentioned in my blogger description, I am a huge fan of most types of movies. It’s a part of my life that I’ve always had having been lucky enough to have parents that loved to sit down and spend an afternoon watching a good DVD (or VHS really, anyone remember those?). Being at university, I thought I’d have far less opportunities, let alone time, to enjoy a good flick. Actually, budget providing, I’ve watched my good share of blockbusters whilst I’ve been studying here! Excluding the DVD player and vast collection of cute Disney cartoons that my flat mates have around, there are plenty of ways you can celebrate being a film fan at Leicester.
The first things I’ll cover are the cinemas themselves. Having two big cinema chains within walking distance from the university is a key mention. Although it’s yet to happen, I’ve definitely felt the occasional pull of temptation towards spending a 4 -hour gap watching an eagerly awaited sequel instead of sitting around in the Library. There are also the occasional student discounts if you time your visit right! Basically, it’s just an easy place to get together and meet up with friends – especially since the cinemas are located near great and popular places to grab some food.
If huge cinema chains aren’t to your taste, there are still plenty of options available. For example there is Phoenix that runs fantastic themed events every year alongside screening blockbusters at great prices. Last year I had the pleasure of attending their Harry Potter event where my friends and I basically drowned in nostalgia as we re-watched The Prisoner of Azkaban with both new and old fans. This year they are running their Horror Night Halloween theme again – rightly named Frightarama – and having a soft spot for a good jump scare, I am definitely tempted to come along.
The city isn’t the only thing offering things for film fans. The Students Union boasts a collection of societies ready to offer screenings of all types – most hold their film showings at our very own film theatre on campus! For example, there’s the classic Film society and for the sci-fi fans amongst you, the Science Fiction and Fantasy society. I must admit that I haven’t had the chance to attend their screenings yet but it’s a great way to go see a movie you haven’t seen and meet likeminded people.
Finally, I thought I’d have to mention the cliché and admit that I don’t have a favourite movie. However I do have a list of movies I’ll happily re-watch again and again which basically means the same thing. A recent addition was Interstellar, the tear-jerker of a space epic from 2014 – which holds a special place in my heart as it was the first ever film I watched in a Leicester cinema. The trailer has been warmly left below. Feel free to tell me about your favourite films! Or if you have any tips for film lovers who are coming to Leicester and want to know what the city has to offer.
