This year I was part of the Equestrian Varsity team riding against DMU.
Varsity is the biggest sporting event of year for the students at University of Leicester and it’s incredibly exciting to take part. All the competitors will train hard for the weeks before their fixture and each win accumulates points for the university! The uni with the most points at the end wins varsity and of course this means there’s a healthy amount of rivalry between the unis.
For equestrian we compete in dressage and show jumping, and the best team overall for both wins. We had two teams competing this year and I was part of the B team! I absolutely loved the day, we had a lot of supporters come to watch and it was great to take part in varsity as a whole representing the uni! Despite strong performances from all the riders we didn’t win this year but as a club we are determined to train even harder ready for next year (but Leicester did win overall)!
Joining a sports team is a great opportunity at uni. It’s a chance to make friends with people who share an interest with you and training/competing with a team is so rewarding! It’s definitely been one of the best parts of my uni experience! I really recommend trying a few out when you come to uni, you may find your best friends in a sports club!
