In my last post I told you about my trip travelling around Italy up until we left Trecase to go to Bari!
Bari was really nice in the centre, even though it doesn’t have the best reputation, but if you are going I would definitely stay in the centre not the outskirts. For all our accommodation we booked through Airbnb which saved us a lot of money because we cooked instead of eating out for most of the trip! In Bari we were staying on a posh shopping area in the new town, which was about a 5 minute walk from the Old Town part of the city. The old town was a maze of small streets and was very rustic!
From Bari we also travelled to Alberobello, home of the ‘Trulli’, which are white huts. They have conical shaped roofs and are the only place in the world that these houses exist. The town is a UNESCO world heritage site and these buildings were designed to be easy to take down. This is because it was once ruled by a feudal family and they wished to avoid property tax, so instructed their peasants to build houses that could be quickly taken down before property inspections. Finally the people of the town got fed up of this and went to the king to protest, the town was made independent of the feudal family and given ‘town’ status. Alberobello is so unique and very pretty! There’s a lot of lovely gift shops and we had some great desserts in a café to avoid a brief downpour.
The final place we visited was Lecce. There is an old city centre which, like much of the old parts of Italian cities, is full of narrow streets and beautiful architecture. We pretty much wandered for a few hours around this area. There is a castle we walked through and like many cities in Italy, an elaborate church in the centre. There is also an amphitheatre and ruins in the central square of the town, stumbling cross history such as this is one of the best things about travelling through Italy!
We flew out of Bari to Milan and from there we were meant to fly back to London City. However our flight was delayed and eventually cancelled and we ended up flying back a day late to Heathrow! As annoying as this was, we did get a night in a hotel and meals included which did make a stressful situation a bit better!
Overall I loved Italy and the travelling! I am already planning my next trip!!
