There are a lot of things you can do this week during Freshers from going to your first Lets Disko to attending your first lectures! But the best thing you can do (in my opinion) is join a sports team!
I joined the Equestrian and Polo Club in my first year and now, two years later, I’m the Club Captain. I can hands down say that joining the club is the best thing I’ve done during my time at uni. I love the opportunity to carry on my favourite sport at uni and I’ve loved the chance to learn a brand new one (polo).
Joining a sports team is a great way to stay active (which is good for your mental and physical health), whilst having a lot of fun. But not only that I’ve made some of my best friends through the club and I love the fact that this is a completely separate group to my housemates or people on my course. A sports club means that you will have a supportive group of people that will look out for you and notice if you aren’t turning up to training or socials.
Socials are another amazing part of being part of a sports club, it’s great knowing that you will always have a fun group of people to go out with on a Wednesday (often in fancy dress – what’s not to love?).

Our first social of the year was our welcome social. We went to the Zoo Party (hence the animal themed makeup) – this year it will be Unicorn themed!!!
Also in your second or third year you will have the chance to run for a position on club committee, I’ve loved being part of committee. Last year I was Polo Captain and this year I’m Club Captain. It’s a great addition to your CV to have helped run a University Club and it also allows you to get to know the other committee members really well. It’s a great feeling when you all work together towards an event or plan and it pays off.
Finally, if you are the competitive type you can compete for your club’s sports teams. They usually have different teams depending on how good or experienced you are. On top of this you may be able to take part in Varsity!!! This is a big annual sports event in which we compete against DMU and the uni with the most points at the end wins Varsity!
So as you can probably tell I love being a member of a sports club and I think if you do one thing this week you should sign up for one (and just to be clear it 100% should be UOLEPC – we are a mixed club and welcome all abilities).
