So my final varsity at Leicester is drawing to a close and it’s been the best one yet!
I finally made it to the rugby after two years of planning to and not getting there for one reason or another! It was great fun, two exciting games (especially the women’s!) and an awesome atmosphere. There was a lot of team spirit from all the Leicester fans with some healthy rivalry between the two unis. It was exciting to see the our brand new mascot Gary the Griffin, and also DMU’s new mascot too I suppose! We went as a club (Equestrian and Polo) and had a fantastic time despite being cold and a bit rainy, the only downside is that the drinks are really expensive at the stadium.
As for our own Equestrian varsity last Wednesday, I was riding in B team for the second time which was really good fun! Our varsity is run the same way that our BUCs competitions are, so there are four riders on a team and each one draws one of four horses for the dressage. Then your dressage score is based on the points difference between you and the person that did the best on the horse. So if you get the best score you get zero penalties. Then the teams draw horses again and do the same thing for the showjumping round. The idea is that you get scored against other people on your horse, so differences in the abilities of the horses don’t affected how well you so it makes it fairer. Unfortunately, neither team won for us this year, but we did get some great individual placings including one of our B team riders coming overall third!
I had a great time! I didn’t do as well as I would have liked in the dressage, I think out of a combination of the girl I was against on my horse riding a really beautiful test and because the horse wasn’t the kind of horse I find easy to ride. But my showjumping round went really well and I got one of the best jumping scores of the night which was a really nice way to finish varsity!!
Overall varsity has been a great couple of weeks and it’s a great showcase of sport at uni!
