The Chemistry department (or at least a corner of it)
Okay, hello. So since this is my first blog post, I guess I ought to obey convention and dedicate it to introducing myself. So hello to you, dear reader.
I’m Will and I study Chemistry. I live in a village quite near Reading (but not that near), where there’s not a lot to do. I’m spending most of my summer working in a kitchen, although I really like taking photos and cooking on my days off. I have just got back from a holiday in Barcelona, and have another holiday to France planned for September, both with friends I met at university, so it’s not all work. I am also still only 18 (for another few days at least) thanks to having a birthday that’s painfully late in the academic year. I’m a big fan of making the most of the day, and filling my time completely, but I’m also a fan of spending far too much time in bed.
I am a tour guide on open days around the Chemistry department, and quite a few people have asked me why I chose to study Chemistry, I think looking for guidance on how they should choose what to study for themselves. But the truth of it all is that I chose to study Chemistry because it’s just always been my favourite subject. I think you lose a little bit of the magic you see in something as soon as you start to analyse it too much, so I generally try not to. What I can tell you, though, is that I really love seeing how the world is made up of lots of teeny-tiny particles that all interact together to make the world the way it is.
Another question I’m asked is ‘Why Leicester?’ Or even, from one prospective student simply ‘Go on then. Convince me.’ This one is a little more difficult to answer I think, so I shall leave that question for a post all to itself.
Oh also, I know most people write ‘feel free to comment on what I’ve written’ or whatever at the end of their blogs, and you probably read that like ‘yeah, well I could… Or I could do something infinitely more fun instead’ (I know that’s how I read it…). But seriously, do please comment on any of my blogs if the urge so takes you, otherwise it’s just me having a sort-of conversation with myself, and that just makes me feel a bit like a crazy person. Even if you don’t have any questions, just come say hi or something.
Anyway, the sun’s out so I hope summer is treating you well.
