“Now I can say I’ve eaten The Godfather”.
I rushed to Bella Italia to meet my climbing buddies but arrived there earlier to find two nicely set up tables with balloons! Don’t worry they were smart balloons, not clown balloons. Before I’d even mentioned my name the waitress greeted me and asked if I was with the student party of 28, did she read my mind or was it the balloons? As we all took our seats I appreciated how nicely the tables were set out, with wine glasses ready and candles lit. Without asking, the waitress brought the menus over and iced water was placed on the table. As she left the lights were dimmed which added to the atmosphere and started the conversations flowing.
I regret to say they don’t serve bitter, ale or lager, but it is an Italian restaurant. I’m happy to say my replacement made up for this, I drank ‘La Rossa’, a 7.5% Italian beer with a bitter taste and sweet kick, just how I like it. My bruschetta starter arrived in good time, along with everybody else’s. I was surprised that the waitress remembered my order without having to ask, good job when serving 28 students! There was just the right amount of red onion (nicely finely chopped) while the basil and garlic wasn’t too strong. There was a bit too much rocket but I just brushed this off and maybe a bit too much oil. My main course arrived a few minutes after everybody else but I did order ‘Slow cooked beef stew’ so it was clearly cooked properly and when the waitress told me that it would be a few minutes; she gave it to me less than a minute later. The main course was perfect, all of it was nice and hot and none of it was over cooked. My friend called his order ‘a pizza folded in half’ and said it had lots of meat so he was happy. By the end of the main course I was stuffed but wanted more, we talked about how nice it would be to have 4 stomachs to keep eating and I noticed my other friend had fallen asleep, so he must have enjoyed his meal.
Now we have the desert, which only half of us could manage. Me and my ‘pizza half folded’ friend ordered, drum roll please… The Godfather. Here is the description for this Mac Daddy of deserts: ‘Nutty fudge brownies, vanilla and honeycomb ice cream, chocolate sauce, fresh cream, chocolate popping candy, dark chocolate sprinkles and a wafer curl’, I couldn’t put it better myself.
Did I mention there is a 50% student discount on Mondays? Drinks are not included in the 50% offer and to get it everybody in the party has to order at least one drink. To conclude, it was a nice meal with excellent service and a nice atmosphere. If you fancy something different, a more relaxing student night, I would recommend Bella Italia.
