I smile but I’m too tired, weary from a long train journey but now this old train keeps me awake. I’m in Skegness to visit a good friend from uni for a ‘Pre-term party’ and this reminded me of how accustomed I’ve become to travelling and indeed, the uni lifestyle. This reminded me of my faviourite experience as a first year but it’s difficult to choose which. Everything I’ve done at Leicester uni has been an experience; the good nights, the late nights and the ugly hangovers barely scratch the surface.
If I had to choose, the most exciting experience in first year was going snowboarding in the Alps with LUSSC; Leicester University Ski and Snowboarding Club. I’ve always wanted to speed down a mountain on a snowboard then land on my face in the snow. Getting drunk at a very high altitude isn’t difficult, but it is original. As much as I enjoyed the holiday, I have to admit that it set me back a lot of cash and wasn’t my most memorable experience so far. That time goes to Sport climbing in Portland with the University of Leicester Mountaineering Society at the end of my second year. We didn’t drink much, but we had fun hiking and I finally learnt how to sport climb, which brought back my fear of heights! I’m cheating here by moving away from first year but I’ve already mentioned that second year was my favourite, if only because I was more sober to remember it.
With more to add to this whole uni experience I think that remembering my final year won’t be a problem. I’ve got so many things planned that staying sober will be a priority. When I get off this train I’ll be meeting two of my friends who I met on the first day of uni, one of them I’m living with next year. If the three of us are still friends after graduation, then that will be a journey to remember.
