The last month has seen a variety of great sporting successes for the city! Leicester is lucky to have a successful football and rugby team, playing at a good standard. The good news for Leicester students, is that there are often fixtures for just £5-10 which can be bought directly from the students union! With both home stadiums being situated just a 10 minutes’ walk from the university, it is well worth checking them out. These stadiums are also the venues for the annual varsity fixtures between the University of Leicester and De Montfort University, which provides a great experience for the players who get a chance to play in these grounds.
If you have been following Leicester City or Leicester Tigers, you may have heard of their recent successes. Following an amazing season in the championship finishing with over 100 points, City easily claimed automatic promotion to the Premier League. This means that next year, the King Power stadium will host to teams such as Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea; which will provide many great games at an excellent standard! Following their victory, there was a city parade by the team showing off the Championship trophy!
Leicester Tigers have also had a successful season, but were knocked out with a last minute try in the Aviva Premiership Semi-Final this week. Leicester Tigers play a high standard of rugby and have many English internationals playing for them such as Tom Youngs, Manu Tuilagi, Dan Cole and Toby Flood. 2015 also brings the Rugby World Cup to England, with the Tigers stadium hosting several games!
As the cricket season begins, there is hope that Leicestershire Country Cricket Club can follow in the footsteps of their sporting neighbours. Like the football and rugby, the country cricket ground provides the venue for the varsity cricket match against De Montfort University.
Lastly, Leicester saw further success with underdog Mark Selby winning the World Championship in the snooker!
Leicester has certainly had a good few weeks, and there are fingers crossed for Leicester city in the Premier League next season! If you are interested in getting tickets to see city or the tigers, check out The Point in the Students union!
Thanks for reading,
Tom.
