Being in a society, and just university in general, is a super exciting time right now as varsity is in full swing. Since my last post I’ve performed with the cheer and stunt society at basketball and football matches and each game is getting more and more competitive and vibes are increasingly exciting! This weekend, it’s finally cheer varsity. Being so much a part of everything is thrilling, but the excitement isn’t purely limited to the games themselves!
Most societies hold weekly socials which, for sports societies, generally involve pres at a student committee member’s house, a trip down to the Dry Dock followed by Let’s Disko at the O2 (where societies have discounted entry) and almost always costume themes! Occasionally socials are a little different, for instance, during dry week for cheer, the social this term was a sober curry night and when the Super Bowl was on, Cheer and the American Footballers held a joint social. After cheer varsity on Saturday, we’re also going to have a celebratory social at the Dry Dock then Mosh… whether we’ll be celebrating victory at winning or just a good effort, we’re yet to find out!
Every year, Cheer and American Football also go on tour to Spain for a week, which is an amazing opportunity to bond with each other and have an amazing time in a different country!
Since I haven’t been with cheer that long, I’ve only been on one social, which was last week, but I had such a great time and met a few people from other societies as well as getting to know my friends from cheer in a different context. And getting to wear all the society related stash is just another little perk of belonging to a society! Overall, there’s a huge sense of belonging and camaraderie in a society that makes its time commitment so worth it!
