As we near the end of March and approach Easter, although I am feeling slightly anxious about my final coursework and dissertation deadlines, I am continuing to enjoy my final year at the University of Leicester. I’ve spoken about some of the reasons for that in my previous posts. But one reason I haven’t mentioned is that I have loved my accommodation this year.
For this academic year, I’ve been living in Opal Court. In no particular order, here is a list of things I love about it:
- Location
Just a 10 minute walks from the library. And depending on the building your which lectures are in, you might have only a 3-5 minute walk in the morning.
- Choice of room size
Choose from standard or large or a studio. I’m very happy in a standard room, but larger rooms offer extra space and a double bed.
- Number of flatmates
Flats at Opal Court have either 5 or 6 bedrooms. That’s a nice balance between having some flatmates you can talk to without having too many that there is constant noise and you are unable to form connections or friendships if you wish.
- Ensuite
All rooms at Opal Court are ensuite. It is been worth the extra money for the shower alone – a fantastic power shower that makes me want to spend too long in there (showers longer than 5 minutes are too long).
- Service
Reception is open 24 hours a day. On the two occasions I’ve needed something fixed, that has also been taken care of within the same time period.
- Common Room
Pool. Table tennis. Sky sports on a large television screen. Do I need to say more?

It’s only fair that I end this post by pointing out something extremely obvious: I am only one person. The reasons I like Opal Court will not appeal to everyone. But all I can say is that I’ve had a great experience living here. If I was staying in Leicester next academic year, I would happily stay at Opal Court again.
I hope everyone has a Happy Easter.
