I recently received an email inviting me to join a course on ‘sustainably’. I’ve always been pretty interested in the environment; we’ve only got one earth after all and so sustainability is pretty important. I think partly to do with the fact I enjoy engineering, I find sustainable energy particularly exciting. I’m not going to get into the politics of climate change but obviously some people deny that’s a thing. Whereas no one at all doubts fossil fuels are running out. And because petrochemical fossil fuels are so important for making plastics and pharmaceuticals, we want to stop burning them as soon as possible. We can’t use them up or even anywhere near them all up for that reason. That’s why sustainable energy is important.
I went to an introductory meeting the other day about the course and they explained that it’s all online, all on blackboard, so there’s no actual contact time. For me, that’s a really good thing. I’m pretty busy with my uni work right now but it means I can have a big crack at it during the extra-long 5 week Easter Holidays.
There are 4 modules:
- One Earth
- Energy and Climate
- Feeding the World
- Are we doomed?
I can’t tell you much about them yet apart from the last one has a fantastic name but I will let you know how it goes when I have a proper look…
It’s an accredited course, it goes on your Higher Educational Achievement Record (HEAR) as long as you pass two of the four modules and complete the course introduction. You also have to submit a short essay on something you’ve learned from your studies, but apparently as long as you put in a little effort it’s very hard to fail that.
So if you’re interested in sustainability like me or if you just fancy topping up your CV you can sign up here. There’s no obligation to compete it one you’ve started and it’s fweee. Why not give it a go?
