Last week Richard talked about his extra-curricular, Film Society. I’m going to follow in his footsteps and discuss my hobby, cheerleading. Leicester University’s cheerleading squad is called the Leicester Panthers. It’s an inclusive society meaning we don’t run try-outs, whatever your level is, totally inexperienced newbie or pro cheerleader; you can join and have fun. And fun is definitely what we specialise in!
We are a very close knit group and practices are full of laughter, even when we have disasters composed of flailing limbs and frustration (like today) we still manage to push through and find the funny side. We practise throughout the year for a variety of events. Currently we are training intensively for the Varsity (Leicester Uni Vs De Montfort Uni) sports matches where university rivalry hits an all-time high! As well as that we are also competing in a national competition in Telford at the beginning of April.
Training is tough. Today I had a three hour practice and now I’m so tired I genuinely think I have lost the use of my legs! To make it worse, every single member of my stunt group sustained a blow to the head at various points. For a while everything seemed to be going disastrously wrong. But we pushed through and did it perfectly just before we left. It’s so satisfying to finally succeed. And the best feeling ever is after performances; the nerves beforehand are crippling but the elation afterwards is worth all the exhaustion, frustration, aches and bruises!
We also do weekly socials which are great fun but I’ll leave these for another post!
I would advise everybody to join a society, maybe try something new, I did and I love it. I have also made some of my best friends through cheerleading. There are so many sports and societies to choose from: click here to see the extensive list! Get involved, it might be the best decision you ever make.
