Leicester Student’s Union houses the O2 Academy, our own personal nightclub. Leicester is in fact the only University to have its own O2 Academy on campus. And this excellent venue is host to what is, in my humble opinion, by far the best night of the week in Leicester. Wednesday night is Red Leicester. As the incredibly witty pun suggests, Red Leicester is a cheese night. Now this may not be your cup of tea but I love it! All the nineties hits are played, 3 remaining members of S Club 7 even came and performed. Seeing as I never got to see them live in my youth, I was in element. I loved it. And recently, although I’m somewhat ashamed to admit it, the band I’m always waiting for is One Direction, which has swiftly become a Red Leicester classic. They even play the current chart stuff for all you hipsters out there! And to top it off, Red Leicester tradition dictates that every single Wednesday ends with Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ and Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels.’ You couldn’t ask for a better mix of music.
If this hasn’t convinced you already, then this next revelation will. Fancy dress is pretty much compulsory. Wednesday is Sports vs Societies and it is the night where sports clubs and societies go out on their socials. I have never questioned the fact that socials are always themed. It’s just the way it is. And as all the different societies have different themes each week, Red Leicester can be a surreal experience. Animals, togas, armies, police, cartoon characters, heroes, villains, I could go on and on!
You will end up with enough fancy dress outfits to wear a different costume every day for a month. Start prepping you wardrobe now. Put on some cheesy music. Red Leicester awaits you!
