Apparently the jet stream (whatever that is! Wikipedia tried to explain but it went way over my head) has finally gone away and summer has arrived in earnest. I’ve optimistically put away the jumpers, jeans and fluffy socks I’d been wearing up until now and have been enjoying the sun and summer fun as much as possible.
I went with my family to see Shrek The Musical at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. A very appropriate location as the Muffin Man of the nursery rhyme, who makes the gingerbread men in the film, lives, of course, in Drury Lane. Before the show we had a lovely picnic in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, where lots of people were enjoying the last of the day’s sunshine. Shrek was very funny and clever – I was particularly impressed by the giant puppet dragon!
Today I went on a picnic at The Vyne, a local National Trust house and garden. The weather was absolutely perfect and the gardens, woodlands and lakes were a beautiful picnic setting. In the evening, I made a big jug of super summery Pimms and we had supper in the garden for the first time this year. Lovely.
I started a summer job looking after two children who live close by. They are at a theatre summer school between 9:45am and 3:15pm but I am looking after them before and after while their parents are still at work. As I am planning to apply for a PGCE this September it should be good experience to put on my application. In my opinion, it’s also a much more fun way to earn some summer cash than shop work! Between babysitting I lay on a rug in the garden reading Harry Potter, a guilty pleasure of mine!
Looking after the children again. In the afternoon I went swimming with them in their pool which was very nice given the now sweltering heat!
The kid’s Dad is off work today so I am also off. I spent the day basking in the sun, topping up my tan from Turkey and feeling very virtuous because I’m reading the as-heavy-as-it-sounds, Cultures of Piety: Medieval English Devotional Literature in Translation. However, I’m luckily finding my dissertation reading interesting rather than boring which bodes well!
Today the sun is also blazing and I have another day off so I intend to head outside into the garden and make the most of this beautiful weather as, sadly, it is supposed to be a lot less hot by the weekend.
I hope you’re all enjoying the sun too!
