This is simply a postcard to say that, yes, the weather is being weird everywhere. We’re not even safe in Italy. Overly warm winter — although it didn’t feel like it — and then overly cold March. Followed by overly rainy April (don’t give me that April Showers baloney). The spring has had several false starts. It appeared to arrive in March. The clouds were melted by the sun’s rays, if not scientifically then at least figuratively, and it seemed as if it would be National-Central-Heating-Turning-Off-Day all round. But then the cold returned, and we went in from our balconies and wrapped ourselves in whatever woolly materials were at hand.
Following this we hibernated, every day checking Wunderground and never really believing that the predictions for all the week could be so bleak. Hope never died, despite the objective evidence that proved that hope was completely illogical. March went on with its cold sunny days and cold moony nights, and then April hit. Suddenly, the sun returned. It seemed as if our long dark winter was definitively at an end. And then the rain came in. The future was unclear. Days before I travelled to Venice, the air began to heat up. Was it possible? Yes — almost two weeks of sun!
Three weeks was too much to ask for. A errant plane punctured the sky and it leaked all over us for a long weekend. It’s sunny right now. Forecast says more rain’s a-coming, and that any picnic plans should take into consideration the possible severe consequences. Is this Italy? What’s going on in the world?
