So, you’re one of the lucky ones to be successfully offered an Internship at one of the top company’s in London. Congratulations! It’s your chance to get some great experience in your field and prove your skills to the people that really matter. If you do well enough, maybe you’ll even get a job at the end of it?
When I was offered a two week placement at one of the top publishing company’s in London, I was ecstatic! But when it came to planning my travel and accommodation, I hit a snag! I really didn’t think about the general costs of living in London – not that I would have thought twice about this amazing opportunity. But, for those who are hoping to get some experience in London, it is definitely something to think about when you apply.
I am lucky to have a sibling living and working in the area and so, was kindly offered his sofa for two weeks – not the luxurious image I pictured when I thought of an exciting internship in London. And, the lack of sleep really starts to take its toll by day 3.
If you’re like me, and from a small town in the North, London is a pretty huge and scary place. Exciting – don’t get me wrong, but scary all the same. So, be prepared to be squashed into a humid and sweltering tube from time to time, be pushed over to get through a ticket barrier almost every day and be told off for standing on the left hand side of an escalator.
However, even though it might not be exactly what I envisaged, and once I realised The Devil Wears Prada is not as realistic as I first thought, it is turning out to be an amazing opportunity to gain some experience and insight into my chosen career.
