Following the UN Women’s Parity Report this week, I thought it would be a good idea to explain just how the University of Leicester is involved with the global HeforShe project. As an Equality and Diversity Champion for the university, I feel particularly passionate about this cause, and am genuinely privileged to be a part of it.
Anyone who has visited the university’s campus may have seen HeforShe posters dotted around but not really know what they’re about; the reason is a lot bigger than you think. In September 2014, the United Nations set up a new initiative called HeforShe, encouraging everyone, especially males, to actively support gender equality and issues arising from this subject. The overall aim is to get over one billion men to sign up to the project, but of course anyone’s commitment is celebrated. Following this the 10x10x10 impact was launched; this is where the University of Leicester comes in. The three tens stand for three distinct groups of influence, hoping to make a change for the better, in terms of gender equality; these are heads of state, corporate executives, and ten universities from around the globe. So, out of the thousands, upon thousands, of universities around the world Leicester was chosen to stand with the UN in the fight for gender equality…not your average kind of day, right?!
In consideration of many current topical issues, such as the gender pay divide and education privileges towards males in certain countries, it’s critically important for people to come together and support such causes for change. With HeforShe focusing on education, identity, work, politics, violence and health, there are hopefully a plethora of changes coming to our global society, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.
In addition to the University of Leicester other people and institutions taking part including the University of Oxford, University of Hong Kong, Jes Staley (CEO of Barclays), Paul Polman (CEO of Unilever), Shinzo Abe (Prime Minister of Japan), and Nana Akufo-Addo (President of Ghana). But I suppose one of the most exciting ambassadors, well for Harry Potter fans in particular, is none other than Emma Watson, the righteous witch Hermione Granger!
So, although I’ve not listed the millions of people involved with this cause hopefully, by showing you some of the high-profile involvement, I have proved how much worth this campaign has. I’ll leave some links below if you’re interested in finding out a bit more, for example the full list of 10x10x10 initiative participates, and to give you the option to pledge your support to the campaign. Every little action helps, and things really can change.
Take Care Everyone, I’ll Speak to You All Soon!
