Now this first semester is in full swing, you may already be buried in deadlines and other responsibilities, I know I am. However, just as work is in full swing, so are the post-freshers events on Leicester’s campus; and there’s lots to do. For those of you who don’t know, October is the UK’s Black History Month, a global initiative celebrating black excellence in a plethora of sectors, including law, literature, science, sport, and many more. As an Equality & Diversity Champion I have the pleasure of being invited to all sorts of events, surrounding the celebration of diversity on campus. This month is no exception with plenty of events for everyone to get involved with.
There’s plenty of talks to go to, particularly in the evenings when you’ll hopefully have some free time. Also, there is a temporary exhibition, displayed for the entire month, entitled ‘Forward to Freedom: The History of British Anti- Apartheid Movement 1959-1994’, located in the Percy Gee Building (Student’s Union), so there’s plenty of time to go and check that out. Additionally, they’ll be another exhibition, in the Percy Gee Building between the 23rd and 27th, called ‘Amnesty International: Black Lives Matter’.
However, as a film student, I’m most looking forward to the film screenings coming up this month! Something of interest for all however may be the screening of ‘Get Out!’ on the 30th, right in time for Halloween. Sadly I cannot be there, for a very important reason, more on that another time, but I hope some of you guys will check it out; I’m sure it would be a great evening out.
Finally, I also thought Leicester students would like to know about a volunteering opportunity, through the David Wilson library, about discovering more about Black History Month; I’ll leave the link below with more information.
Just a quick post this time folks, but I’m leaving some links below to more information and events from Leicester’s Black History Month. Don’t forget to use the hashtag ‘BlackAtLeicester’, and let everyone know what you’re up to this October.
Take Care Everyone, I’ll Speak to You All Soon!
