The 18th of April marked the two month countdown for moving into Disney housing in Orlando, and officially starting the Cultural Exchange Program. To say I’m excited would be an absolute understatement, but there’s still so much to do!
I have sorted quite a few things so far, including my flights, booked a hotel to stay in before I move into my apartment, met a group of lovely girls I’m hoping to live with (fingers crossed Disney let us link up!), I’m part way through my visa process and have my visa appointment in the next few days. I still need to sort out various pieces of insurance, I need to select preferences for my Disney housing, and, last but not least, I ‘need’ to go shopping.
Unlike halls at most universities Disney housing, works quite differently, in that the only household essential you have to bring is bedding and towels, which you can either bring over or take a trip to the local Walmart. Other than than, cutlery, crockery, and pretty much any type of furnishing are already provided; you even get a dishwasher…you know you’re a student when that prospect genuinely excites. The apartments are all single gender and split into ‘wellness’ and ‘non-wellness’ apartments, which simply separates those under and over twenty-one years old. Another thing that’s different is the concept of roommates, probably more common to colleges in the US. I’ve never shared a room with anyone, other than a night or two on occasion so this will certainly be very different for me but I’m looking forward too it; plus I sleep like a log so any roommate of mine can crash about in the ensuite as much as she desires.
I’d be lying however if I told you that I wasn’t nervous, scared, apprehensive etc. Everything I’m doing is such a big step; until autumn last year I hadn’t so much as commuted on my own, so flying alone for the first time (I should point out that me and flying don’t exactly have a good history), and living thousands of miles from home and any familiarity is pretty daunting. I worry that I’ll miss out on something great with my friends this summer, and I’m going to miss them all so much. Admittedly I’m already planning a little goodbye party for a week or so before I go, and definitely have a glass of wine before over two months sober; although I’m pretty sure other people find this a greater loss than me. Either way, I know this is the best opportunity I could have ever wished for and I can’t wait to get out there…I just might need to buy a few pairs of shorts first.
I’ll probably write another update just before I go, but if anyone has any questions about my adventure then simply leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.
Take Care Everyone, I’ll Speak to You All Soon!
