It’s been a while everyone, but hoping to have a couple more posts out in the next week or so. It’s been very hard to juggle continuing my communications with home, whilst also living my life to the fullest in America.
I guess on that subject I want to talk about homesickness, or rather my lack of it. I feel like this is something everyone experiences homesickness at some point in their life, especially whilst at university. Although I don’t really know why I’m not homesick, I wanted to share a few tips as how to combat those feelings, especially for anyone concerned about their first year in university.
Probably the most important thing is to keep doing things. It’s often hard not to procrastinate as a student, but you’ll often feel less homesick with less time to think about your life at home.
2.No More Scrolling:
Comparing yourself to others is toxic, but is often amplified when you’re experiencing negative emotions. Although it’s natural to want to see what your friends are up to at their respective universities, but if someone is posting lots of photos it doesn’t actually mean they’re having a better time than you, and neither does it mean you need to post every moment to ‘keep up’. Live in the moment.
3.Keep in Touch:
Possibly the most obvious one, but as much as you’re busy make the effort to keep in touch with your friends and family no matter how far away you are from them. Keeping in touch can also mean communicating with those around you; you’ll easily find someone who is in the same boat as you if you’re missing home. It’s okay to feel negative, but sharing this information can really help.
I hope some of you will keep this in mind in the coming months, however do remember that homesickness is usually a very temporary state; things will get better!
