So you’re starting university, potentially moving to a new place, away from friends, family, and familiarity, and now need to fit your life into the back of a car. It’s a pretty daunting prospect, thinking about all the stuff you’re going to need; but here are a few basic tips to hopefully make the process a little bit smoother.
1.Make A List
To most people this may seem like a pretty obvious step, but even just downloading a list from the internet (The Student Room is usually a good resource for this) will prevent you from forgetting anything truly important. When I pack for university, I have separate lists for different rooms of my flat/house, also leaving lots of space at the bottom to add some other items that I’m yet to think of.
2.Start Early
I can’t stress this, but don’t give yourself something else to panic about a few days before going to university, pack anything you don’t need on a daily basis a couple of weeks before; and don’t forget to check items off your list as you go.
3.Keep It Cheap
Yes that Cath Kidston plate may look nice, but living in halls means often your stuff, especially those left in communal areas won’t stay pristine for long. Avoid the heartache of having your favourite mug stained or broken and keep it cheap, either by taking older household items that your parents/whoever you live with are willing to get rid of, or stick to Wilko or Ikea for your home goods.
4.Pack Light(ish)
A tricky one for many but it’s time to be realistic about how much space you truly have to transport your things. Yes ten pairs of shoes would ensure every outfit you wear will be perfectly coordinated, but five would still give you some choice but save some valuable room for other things. Prioritise your packing, and don’t forget that a visit from your parents probably isn’t far away so a few more clothes could come down with them a few weeks later.
5.There Are Shops
The majority of universities aren’t in the middle of nowhere, so forgetting something important isn’t usually a problem. For those moving into Oadby Student Village, you have an Asda right on your doorstep selling housewares, food, toiletries, and even clothes, so don’t worry, no need to turn back from that three hour car journey to pick up the cutlery you left in your wardrobe.
Moving can and almost always will be stressful, but with a bit of preparation things can move along much smoother.
