As a student it can be easy to get out of the habit of keeping fit, especially at this time of year when you’re spending a lot of time working on coursework and preparing for exams. Exercise is a good way to de-stress, have fun and get some fresh air. If you’re serious about getting involved, Team Leicester has loads of different Sports clubs which you can get involved in. However, if like me you want to be able to stay active but not at a competitive level, there are plenty of other options available.
The university has 2 sports centres, one on campus and one at Oadby Student Village, each with a gym and swimming pool. Students can pay to be a member for a year or use the facilities on a pay-as-you-go basis. If you want something more organised in order to keep you motivated, Let’s Do Leicester organise a range of sports sessions which are either free or low cost, non-competitive and open to everyone to participate in. Or alternatively there’s Parkrun which I like to take part in. This is a free, timed 5km run every Saturday morning at 9 am. There’s loads of Parkrun events all over the world and handily there’s one in Victoria Park which is right next to campus. Leicester also has loads of great parks and open spaces for going out for a walk, run or bike ride if you’d rather go at your own pace.
