Back in the day, before I joined the University, the Friday Student Club night at the SU was called “Madferit”. Then it was called “The Big Shabang” and now its just “Shabang”. Times change, but the Christian Union (CU) has been out there every Friday night for YEARS serving the campus with Free hot drinks (tea, coffee and hot chocolate!) as well as cold water. We’re normally out there from 1AM until kickout at 3/3:30AM, then talking to hangers-on as they get their chips and burgers from the amazing Food Factory; after packing up, cleaning and reflecting on the night, I sometimes won’t get to bed until gone 5. We call it ‘MadferTea’ in honour of the old name of the club night (Tea Big Shabang just didn’t work!!).
Our aim is to serve the campus practically, brightening up people’s evenings as they leave, sobering people up if necessary, answering questions, offering advice, and ultimately showing God’s love to everyone as we believe He loves us.
Friday night was great, we had one of the largest teams we’ve had out for a while, so much so that we needed two tables! Some very interesting conversations and questions happen all the time, and Friday was no exception. I often think that “A drunk man’s words are a sober man’s thoughts”, and its amazing how much people are willing to open up to you and discuss after a drink or two.
*Have you ever received a free drink or had a chat with us? Let me know!*
Here’s a picture of the team just after we got out (when it was still quiet!!).
This week however, we also did it on Wednesday night at Red Leicester, and as you can see, on Friday night we were wearing special t-shirts… Why? Because next week, the CU is running an Events Week called “Jesus for Sceptics”!
We’ve got a brilliant speaker, Michael Ots, coming to talk on 10 different topics. Every day, we’ve got a free lunch 12-1 or 1-2, where he’ll speak for 15 or so minutes over lunch, with discussion/Q+A afterwards. In the evenings, we’ve hired out The Square (which we’ll decorate with fairy lights!), for slightly longer talks 7:30-9ish all in the comfort of the giant sofas!
There’s no such thing as a stupid question, and no background knowledge or belief is assumed, we just want to give people the opportunity to hear more about Jesus, to talk to people about what we believe and why!
The CU is just one of the religious societies we have at Leicester, so if you do have a faith (or perhaps are searching), then there’ll hopefully be something here for you!
