For those of you who are new to this blog- I’ve been trying out something where I post a quote about history every now and again in the hope it will make us all think about history and what it really is. I don’t always agree with the quotes but I pick them because I think they help us understand the uses and problems of studying History. If you want to check out any of the other quotes I have posted in the past just click on the ‘quotes’ tag bellow.
This semester I’ve been learning about the indigenous people of pre-conquest America and the sources used to study them. This topic has made me really consider sources and how historians, and other scholars, often have to rely on sources that may not be true in the search for the truth. This quote is a bit depressing for any historian, but it does make me think about how much do we consider true in history, is actually a well established hope for truth.
‘Historians today are priests of a cult of truth, called to the service of a god whose existence they are doomed to doubt’
