‘Historical conclusions are not infallible, but when they are well evidenced and carefully argued they deserve to be taken as telling us something true about the world’
I’ve been thinking about this quote, and I don’t know if Matthew Restall meant it to mean this, but to me I think everything we read as historians tells us something. Maybe it is that during a certain time people felt like this about history, or that this particular historian believes something ridiculous and even though it is not true, it tells us something about how that person sees history.
In some ways we all have our own interpretations of history, and we are convinced they are true- and why we think they are true tells us something about ourselves and our environment.
