Over the last few weeks I have started volunteering for a charity called Learning for the Fourth Age, which is an organisation that aims to link volunteers with care home residents who would like to learn something new. Despite the fact that I have only been doing it for 2 hours a week for a few weeks I have already felt I have gained a lot from it, as I have met some amazing people, done fun craft things, and learnt a lot.
It seems a bit ridiculous to start volunteering in the third year where work is heavy and free time is a luxury, but when I heard about L4A, I thought it sounded really interesting and I also believe it is a good thing to take a break from work every now and again and do something different.
However, I would have loved to have started sooner and I wish I had gotten more proactive in finding somewhere to volunteer. So I’d like to take this opportunity to tell everyone, whatever year, but especially those who will be coming to Leicester in September to volunteer.
This is because you can get a lot out of volunteering as not only is it enjoyable, but it will make you feel good about yourself and it is something that will look impressive on that ever important CV.
So don’t just think about all the work you have to do, take some time out and do something for others and yourself.
