Hello! I’m Lauren, and I’m going to be a new History blogger (in addition to Shannon). I’m really excited about sharing my experiences at the University of Leicester, and hope my posts will prove useful and interesting to you all.
So, where to start? I have just finished my second year, which admittedly was more different to life as a fresher than I thought it would be. Living in a house was not at all like halls. I do think my academic abilities have improved a lot this year… we will find out next year when the scary shadows of the looming dissertation become a reality, I guess. I’m not terrified though. This year I thought I’d done really badly in one of my exams but my results were actually very good; I’ve thus learnt that university is largely about gaining confidence in your own abilities.
So now I’ve discovered that I can achieve highly, the prospect of my dissertation actually seems half appealing. I’ve chosen to write about African-American women’s experiences during the Civil Rights Movement in the USA- so if that’s something you’re interested in, be sure to keep an eye out!
As you can probably imagine, my summer will be partly consumed by research for my dissertation, and I’m also finally going to learn to drive, but I also deserve a break. I’ve just got back from Tenerife, I’m going to Lincolnshire just after I’ve finished this post, and I even have a holiday booked to Turkey later this month. For me, life as a student is about working (very) hard, but definitely rewarding myself too!
Until next time!
