Recently, I realised that I’ve reached that crucial point during my degree where I need to start thinking about the future. As scary as this was, I knew that I couldn’t avoid the reality that I won’t be an undergraduate student forever. For this reason, I started looking through the various opportunities that are advertised online on the University’s ‘My Careers’ page to find some useful experience.
After finding some opportunities such as internships and voluntary work that both appealed to me and applied to my future career choice of PR, it was time to write some applications. Generally, what the employers were asking for was a CV and a covering letter, alongside a specific writing-orientated task which tended to vary. Although my CV had generally been helpful in landing me the odd retail or hospitality job, it was by no means perfect; I thus decided to book myself an ‘Application and Selection’ appointment with the Career Development Service. It’s really easy to book a meeting, all you need to do is select a time slot online and complete the mandatory preparatory documents ahead of the date.
In my meeting, we discussed what the main purpose of updating my CV was, and thus decided that the area requiring most attention was ‘tailoring’. The questions I was persuaded to address were whether 1. my CV was tailored to the specific points made in job descriptions or person specifications, and 2. direct links were made between my experiences and skills and the role I was applying for. I won’t bore you with all the smaller details, but they were extremely helpful in assisting with the makeover my CV desperately needed.
Although there’s still a large chance that I haven’t been successful, I can rest knowing that I sought advice regarding my applications and that they were better than they would have been had I not. As well as ‘Application and Selection’ meetings, the Career Development Service offers ‘Mock Interviews and Assessments’, ‘Career Guidance’ and ‘Business Coaching’ meetings; I would strongly encourage all students to make the most of this service. I will definitely be using it again!
