So recently I’ve done quite a few serious posts about academic stuff, so I thought I’d do something a little bit more light hearted for you guys!
I remember when I first came to university, everyone was telling me that I’d probably put on weight because I’d all I’d be eating was takeaways, baked beans, ready meals, etc. – I’m sure you’ve probably heard similar things.
While many people do put on weight, I can tell you that it’s easier than you think to stay healthy while you’re studying. Perhaps it may take some extra effort on your part, but from person experience I can say that you’ll feel better for it.
Of course, you’ll be on a budget but there are plenty of ways to eat all the right types of food on a budget. Discount stores like ALDI or Lidl are great for buying all your veg and it doesn’t break the bank balance! You can also buy meat in bulk at stores like Makro or Costco.
A recommendation that I would make is to try turkey mince! You may think that turkey is only for Christmas, but you’d be wrong. It’s great in burgers, meatballs or a bolognese – trust me!
Maybe you’re not that good at cooking? Well, now’s the time to learn. BBC Good Food have got tons of great recipes or you could buy a student cook book. One day you’ll probably have to cook for yourself, so it seems as good a time as any to learn!
There’s also the option to join the university gym – with access to both the Danielle Brown (campus) and the Roger Bettles (Oadby) sports centres. There are a range of facilities including cardio equipment, weights, a swimming pool, a range of classes and much more. Find out more about the gym memberships here.
Maybe if they gym’s not for you but you enjoy your sport you could join a sports club? There is so much on offer here at Leicester that there will definitely be something you’re interested in. From horse riding to football, from rowing to Quidditch (!!!) you can find something to keep you active.
So just remember – if you put in the effort, you’ll see the results. The first thing that I noticed when changing my lifestyle is that I felt much more awake and energised – it will help with all those assignments you’ll be doing!
