Hello everyone, today I’m gonna talk about the frightening prospect of getting a job after university. It’s okay, try not to throw up because theres good news.
Tuesday morning, the HoA gang went to a meeting with a member of the careers team, who gave us the sunshiney news that A DEGREE IS NOT ENOUGH. (wait I promise it’s gonna get better) 60% of graduates come away from university with a 2:1 or higher. More than half of the graduates, in your grad year, have the grades to apply for your dream job. But, thats all. Having a good grade only gives you permisson to apply. It’s all the other stuff you’re gonna do that makes you stand out when the time comes.
The university has this a-maz-ing scheme called The Leicester Award. It’s an official award that goes on your degree transcript and I urge you to sign up for it when you get a chance at the start of the year. At least check out the Careers Development Service , they know their stuff and they want to help you, don’t leave them hanging.
The Leicester award is gonna be your jump off point for all the wonderful things you’re going to do to build your confidence, get new skills and learn about yourself. In a nutshell, you sign up, work out what areas your skills are not so hot in, and then you choose an experience for the year in one of these areas:
- Industry Awareness
- Leadership and Management
- Community Engagement
- Business and Enterprise
- Personal Development
I know these titles just look like corporate rubbish but what they really mean are opportunities like internships, volunteering, organising events for your clubs and societies, being a course rep, forming your own business enterprise, getting involved with student run media like radio and magazines. Pretty cool right?
The best bit about the Leicester Award is the online work you do alongside your experience project. Just taking that time to look back on what you’ve done is gonna be so helpful to you in learning what you actually gained from it, what skills you’ve improved on and what to do next.
Even if you don’t have a dream job in mind, just doing these extra things is going to be so good for you, now and in the long run. You owe it to yourself to give things a proper crack. It doesn’t have to be a paid intership at a top company to be worth the effort. Maybe you already have a part time job? Maybe you help run a hobby club? Maybe you’re involved in an online project or community? Don’t ever think what you do doesn’t matter, because unless your lying on the couch eating cheetos and scratching yourself, it does.
Take away message: Respect yourself, your time, your achievements and your goals. Encourage and nurture yourself to really make the best of your time at university because you truly deserve it. And sign up for the Leicester Award, like seriously.
