|—||E. H. Gombrich, The Story of Art|
I saw this quote on a popular microblogging website that shall remain nameless, and after verifying its accuracy, I decided it needed to be shared with y’all. Not only is it a gorgeous quote but it leads me on to telling you about something that you need to be doing with your summer instead of eating cereal and scratching yourself.
If you’re planning on starting the History of Art course in the autumn, or if this kinda thing just peels your banana, you should get yourself a copy of E. H. Gombrich’s The Story of Art. It’s pretty much the only core text for the course and for good reason. Gombrich knows his stuff and manages to impart a lifetime of learning in a readable, enjoyable format and there are pictures (thank the lord). Story of Art is written in a chronological format, making it easy for you to find the particular thing you’re looking for. You can (and should, at least once) of course read it start to finish too.
It comes in large and pocket format, my advice would be to get the smaller version, as you are gonna want to bring it to class with you.
I bought my copy in a highstreet chain bookshop but since you have the luxury of time, dear reader, do yourself a favour and buy it online or second hand for a fraction of the cost.
