I finally finished my exams a couple days ago and now I’m in Italy for a few days before semester two begins! I’m the most chilled out I’ve been in a while and I’m very happy to be away from the library for a bit. It was starting to seem like my second home. The bit inbetween the end of exams and the start of semester two is always really nice.
So I’m going to be spending February and March as a Student Buddy! The University of Leicester is hosting a month-long British Language and Cultural programme for some students that are visiting from a partner university in Japan, and they need some Leicester students to be available for the whole period to help out. The whole idea of the programme is for the students to improve their English skills and learn a bit more about British culture. It’s kind of like the summer programme I went to in Tokyo last summer, except that was all about learning the language and culture of Japan.
The sorts of things I’ll be doing will involve welcoming the students and helping them to move in when they arrive, making sure they speak plenty of English, and accompanying them during events and trips. It’s similar to the stuff I do as a committee member of the Erasmus and Exchange society really.
I remember how helpful and friendly the student “assistants” were when I was in Tokyo, and how they made me feel more at ease even when I was alone in a country on the other side of the world. So I’m looking forward to helping other students feel the same way, because I know how daunting these experiences can be. I’m also looking forward to learning a bit more about British culture myself! Even though I am British, my knowledge of my own culture could definitely be improved. And who knows, maybe I could even improve my Japanese language skills. I’m really interested in working in the field of intercultural communication in the future, so this experience could be really useful in that respect.
But for now, I’m gonna relax and have a pizza or two before lectures start again. A presto!
