As you will know from my previous blog posts, I’m a Student Buddy for around 50 Japanese students attending a British and English Culture and Language programme here at Leicester. And after one month (has it really been that long?) they’re all leaving! Sad times.
Last night however some other Student Buddies and I went to karaoke with the Japanese students! It was a traditional Japanese karaoke place, with individual rooms and television screens and microphones. I went to one similar when I was in Tokyo. It was at 19 Gale Bar & Restaurant, a place I’d never heard of before. It was seriously like being in Japan in those karaoke rooms – definitely would recommend it to people in Leicester who are interested in Japanese culture! I actually might consider it a cultural hotspot, seeing as karaoke is a big part of Japanese culture. It’s not really anything like the sort of karaoke you find in pubs in the UK. The atmosphere was amazing, and so was the food!
Today there was an awards ceremony and a farewell lunch for the students. A few of them brought some small gifts from Japan for us, including Japanese sweets!! I seriously love Japanese food. Saying goodbye to all of them actually brought back memories of Tokyo Metropolitan University last summer. It’s always a bummer having to say goodbye to people who live far away from you but I absolutely love these kinds of international and cultural exchange programmes. Opportunities like these are one of the amazing things about going to university.
It’s been such a fun month as a Student Buddy and I’m going to miss it a lot!! Now it’s time to get back to reality and crack on with some studying.
