Casting my mind back to this time last year, I had finished my A Levels, officially left sixth form, and was sitting in a foreign country trying to distract myself about the then scary prospect of moving out to University. In hind site I wish I hadn’t have been so nervous, now realising it was completely unnecessary. I wanted to write a quick post however about something that really helped me leading up to the ominous big move.
I think it’s important to say I’ve never been the biggest advocate of social media, but without it I wouldn’t have had any confidence about finding friends when I moved to University. My main piece of advice is to get talking to other applicants of your university. I already know there’s a few pages, on Facebook, specifically made for Leicester applicants for example!
Whether you try and look for your flatmates, or people on your course, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s crucial that you put yourself out there; everyone is in the same boat as you, so writing a quick post on a page saying what course you’re planning on studying can really make a difference. There’s no guarantee that the person you speak to will become someone you speak to face to face, but having someone to talk to can really help settle some of those nerves, and often if you have a question, someone will have a solution.
Still feeling sceptical?
I suppose the best evidence I can give you is that of my own experience. It took a while and quite a few posts on different pages, but eventually I got talking to two girls who would be on my course in September. We introduced ourselves and just chatted general throughout August. On arrival we arranged to meet up and attend our first lectures together…and I guess the rest is history, as they’re now two of my closest friends! However, what I really wish to point out is that out of thousands of people I found two people on my course, not that difficult you say, but what if I now reveal there are actually less than 10 people on my specific course? Different story!
So I guess my conclusion to that little anecdote is that if I can do it, you out there applying for Medicine, Law, and English, you certainly can. All it really takes is one post on social media to start a conversation.
