For a while now the iscience society has been hoping to organise a joint social with the other science societies. I was looking forward to it as it is always nice to meet fellow science students. In the end, the event that was decided on was a pub quiz made possible by the iscience, physiscs, astronomy and chemistry societies. For the event yesterday evening, we had decided to hired out the Scholar, which is the student pub located on campus in the Student’s Union. Lots of students from the physics, iscience and chemistry societies came along, as well as a few people from engineering and biological sciences so it was pretty busy!
I have been to a number of pub quizzes and, to be honest, I am normally pretty terrible at them. In the one my friends and I often go to when back home over the holidays, I normally answer about 1 question and then that’s about it! I have done a bit better at the few I have been to here in Leicester but it does appear that my general knowledge is often severely lacking. Knowing this, I was not too optimistic when I purchased my tickets. However, as I sat down with my team of 3 fellow iscientists and we started on the first round of questions, I became rather surprised to find that I actually knew quite a number of the answers as did my team mates. So, by about halfway through, I was starting to think that I might actually be able to rank highly for once! Luckily most of the rounds were science general knowledge but there was also a famous scientist picture round, a science fiction round and fantasy round (which was great for me!) and, oddly enough in a science based quiz, a sports round! We actually ended up getting full marks in the sports round much to our surprise! There was even a couple of questions on sports that I was the only person on our team that knew the answer. I was quite proud of that as normally I can’t answer a single sports related question! We didn’t come 1st unfortunately, but we were only few points from the top score and ended up ranking 5th of 23 which I was pretty pleased with! A number of the other iscience teams ranked pretty highly too. Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening and I think all our iscience teams did the society proud.
